Our top tip for the day at Ludlow is SCALES which runs in the 2.45 Handicap Hurdle event. Scales is trained by Kerry Lee and will be ridden today by Richard Patrick who also takes 5lbs off his back. Having won last time out under the same jockey, albeit in an easier race, at the start of October, this 11 year old showed he is in good heart. A repeat of that, and should make the frame at least, at a nice each way price of 9/1.
If a note of caution is required, it should be noted that this horse has won 4 times out of 50 races under National Hunt rules, and never back-to-back successes. Has been known to throw in a poor performance, and there is presumably a reason for a long-ish break since that win last time at Newton Abbot.
All that aside, the performance that day is superior to any effort today’s rivals have put down of late, for example, likely favourite Dentley De Mee will show a win last time out, but consider that conditions under foot were Good to Firm and the time was nothing to write home about.
Scales is a few lbs up from last time, but on paper still has enough in hand, given 95% of that performance again today. That’s the big question mark today: will we see the same level?
